The budding author then decided to try getting one of the stories in her head onto paper. In total, she created six manuscripts. Although she immediately submitted them to Harlequin, who is known as one of the leading romance publishers, her work was rejected time and again.
The following year, Silhouette Books was formed to take on romance writers formerly rejected by Harlequin. Roberts’ first novel, Irish Thoroughbred, was eventually published in 1981.
