When she left school, Oh rejected a four-year journalism scholarship. Instead, she chose to study drama at the National Theatre School of Canada. After graduating in 1993, Oh starred in a theatre production of Oleanna in London, Ontario.

Sandra Oh was previously married to filmmaker Alexander Payne. They married in 2003, separated in 2005, and divorced in 2006. The former couple did not have any children together.
